Know Your Breed: Huacaya vs. Suri

Before you start cleaning, you must identify your alpaca’s breed. They require different grooming tools to maintain their unique textures:

• The Huacaya (The "Cloud"): These are the classic, teddy-bear-style alpacas. Their fur is dense, crimped, and grows outward. They need volume and "poof."

• The Suri (The "Silk"): These alpacas have long, lustrous "pencil locks" that hang down. Their fiber is prized for its extreme silkiness and drape. They need smoothness and shine.

 

The Artisan 3-Step Cleaning Process

Step 1: The "Mechanical" Deep Clean (The Shake)

Alpaca fiber is naturally dirt-repellent. Often, "dirty" fur is actually just dust trapped in the fibers.

• The Method: Take your alpaca outside and give it a vigorous shake.

• For Huacayas: Use a hair dryer on the cool/low setting to blow out deep-seated dust and "re-fluff" the crimp.

• For Suris: Avoid the hairdryer if possible, as high airflow can tangle the long locks. A gentle shake is usually enough to dislodge debris from silky Suri fiber.

Step 2: The Breed-Specific Groom

This is where most people make mistakes. Using the wrong brush can ruin the natural "lock" of a Suri or flatten a Huacaya.

• Grooming the Huacaya: Use a wire slicker brush (a standard pet brush). Gently brush the fur in short, outward strokes. This separates the individual fibers and removes surface grime.

• Grooming the Suri: Never use a wire slicker brush on a Suri. It will shred the beautiful locks and create a frizzy mess. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb or a soft-bristled brush. Comb downward in the direction of the hair growth to maintain the "silky waterfall" effect.

Step 3: Spot Cleaning Stains (The Cornstarch Trick)

If your alpaca has a visible stain, do not reach for the soap immediately.

• The "Dry" Method: Sprinkle a small amount of cornstarch or baby powder onto the stain. Let it sit for 30 minutes to absorb oils, then brush (Huacaya) or comb (Suri) it out.

• The "Damp" Method: If the stain persists, take a microfiber cloth and make it slightly damp with cool water and a drop of wool-safe detergent. Gently dab (don’t rub). Immediately follow up with a dry towel.
