Hummingbird Gourd Ornament — 4"
Inspired Peru
Why does a hand-carved hummingbird gourd ornament make a meaningful gift? This ornament is hand-carved, etched, and hand-painted from a single gourd by an artisan in Cochas, Huancayo — a Peruvian region known for this traditional gourd art. A hummingbird is depicted across the two sides of the gourd: its face on one side, its trailing tail feathers on the other, painted in vivid color against a dark purple background.
The Tradition Behind This Ornament
This ornament is hand-carved and etched from a natural gourd by an artisan in Cochas, Huancayo, a Peruvian region long known for this style of gourd art. After carving and etching the linework by hand, the artisan hand-paints each section in vivid color against a dark purple background — a more detailed, multi-step technique than our plain flame-etched gourd ornaments.
The design wraps a single hummingbird around the whole gourd: one side shows its face, the other shows its tail feathers fanned in color, so the two sides read as one continuous bird rather than two separate images.
Because each gourd is carved, etched, and painted entirely by hand, small variations in line work and color placement are normal and part of what makes every piece genuinely one-of-a-kind.
