Frazada No. 106 — Electric Fuchsia & Indigo Vintage Peruvian Rug
Vintage Frazada
Frazada Rug
Archive No. 106 — One of a Kind | Hand-Loomed Cusco Highlands
No. 106 carries meaning that most rugs do not. The electric fuchsia field is the backdrop — the story is in the symbols. Traditional Inti sun and mountain motifs woven across multiple panels in deep indigo and olive-earth tones, by a weaver who understood that a Frazada could be both thermal barrier and ceremonial object simultaneously. At 74" x 56" this is one of the most iconographically complex pieces in the archive.
Provenance & archival notes
No. 106 was admitted into the archive for two reasons — its exceptional scale and the clarity of its woven iconography. The Inti sun and mountain motifs woven across multiple panels represent a time-intensive process that distinguishes this piece from simpler striped Frazadas. Most weavers produced geometric patterns. A symbolic narrative of this density and precision — combined with the survival of the electric fuchsia register — marks No. 106 as a superior example of mid-century ceremonial Andean textile art.
Hand-loomed in the Cusco highlands on a traditional backstrap loom. The central union seam visible down the center is the physical record of the weaver's body — two panels woven separately and hand-joined at the center with the iconographic pattern maintained in perfect alignment across the seam. That alignment alone speaks to the technical mastery of the maker.
Originally engineered as a heavy-duty thermal barrier for Andean winters. The electric fuchsia register has survived decades of authentic use at high altitude — an unusually preserved example of mid-century Andean dye work that most pieces of this era have lost entirely. Acquired directly from Cusco, Peru. One of a kind — when this piece sells, it is gone.
Curator's notes
- Symbolic density: Selected for the rare inclusion of multiple iconographic panels featuring traditional Inti sun and mountain motifs — a time-intensive weaving process that distinguishes this piece from simpler striped textiles of the same era.
- Chromatic preservation: Features an unusually preserved electric fuchsia register — a hallmark of master-level dye application. Most Frazadas of this color intensity have faded significantly. No. 106 has not.
- Architectural display: Given its scale and symbolic narrative, this piece is equally compelling as a floor installation or a mounted textile work. The iconography reads with equal clarity from both orientations.
Interior design application
No. 106 is not a background piece — it is the room's focal point. The electric fuchsia and deep indigo palette performs best in contemporary, industrial, or maximalist interiors where bold color and symbolic pattern are the design language. It commands attention on a concrete floor, against a white plaster wall, or mounted as the anchor piece in a gallery-style living room.
At 74" x 56" this is one of the largest pieces in the archive. As a floor rug it anchors a substantial living space or dining room. Mounted vertically it becomes a monumental textile work — the Inti sun and mountain symbols function as architectural iconography at this scale.
Recommended companion objects: blackened iron, charred wood furniture, matte basalt stone. The indigo and fuchsia tones perform exceptionally well in spaces with industrial or contemporary architectural elements and high-contrast material palettes.
Use cases: primary area rug · statement wall hanging · gallery-style textile installation · dining room anchor · contemporary loft focal point

Care & conservation
Hand-spun sheep wool is naturally soil-resistant and durable. For routine care shake gently outdoors and air periodically in indirect sunlight. Spot clean only with cool water and a mild pH-neutral wool detergent — never hot water or harsh chemicals as the organic dyes may bleed. Avoid high-suction vacuuming directly on the surface — this can stress the hand-loomed symbol weft over time. Professional dry cleaning only if necessary — specialist in antique or oriental textiles only. Never machine wash or tumble dry.
This piece has survived decades of authentic use in the Andean highlands. With proper care it will outlast most things in your home.
